ANTIQUE ENAMEL HAND PAINTED COMPACT
Striking and lovely antique hand painted powder compact measuring about 2-1/2" long and 2-1/4" deep. Featuring an oblong shape with hinged lid, original mirror, very shabby down feather puff and cased loose powder under screen, back is chased with a lovely swirl and scrolled plume design. Front is absolutely stunning, decorated with a detailed, hand painted miniature image depicting Sappho of Lesbos style women - they hold a dove in pastoral setting - accented with thick applied turquoise enamel to mimic inlaid stone.
Condition is wonderful with no chips, cracks, scratches, hairlines, repairs, discoloration or damage - closure snaps perfectly and mirror is without clouding. Unmarked, it has been tested as at least 800 silver - appears to be faintly gold washed as well - I did not try to polish for fear of removing the gold color - believe it is Austrian or Italian made due to the estate at which it was acquired.  I think this is a stunning compact - the decoration is over the top and so unusual - colors are rich - a beautiful addition to any collection or display!
