Conmemora el Centenario del Acta Jones para la extension de la Ciudadanía Americana a los Puertorriqueños para nuestra participación en la 1ra Guerra Mundial en sus 2 últimos años, 1917 y 1918. La pieza va dedicada a todos los Veteranos Puertorriqueños de todas las épocas, en especial a los 18,000 que sirvieron en Europa, como Juan Pagán DelValle de Cuesta Vieja de Aguadilla, abuelo.
CARACTERISTICAS:
Subasta por una (1) medalla grande con terminado en níquel antiguo, simulando el color normal de las armas de fuego, opaco sin brillo.
Su ANVERSO muestra un águila calva, tomada prestada del símbolo del Depto. de Veteranos, sosteniendo las 2 banderas, Puertorriqueña y Americana, sobre la cual se lee: "President Thomas Woodrow Wilson, Jones - Shafroth Act, 2 Mar 1917 ". Luego bajo el águila, se lee: " E Pluribus Unum (de muchos, uno)". Todo en referencia a al unión de la ciudadanía local a la estadounidense. Al rededor de la misma, se lee: "Centenario de la Ciudadanía Americana 1917 Grant of American Citizenship Centennial, y el número 100mo, en inglés 100th.
El REVERSO p
resenta una guardia de la bandera (color guard) integrada por cuatro integrantes de la Armada, sosteniendo la bandera Americana junto a la Puertorriqueña en posición de atención, normalmente utilizada durante un tributo a los caídos en guerra, ya que los actos del Día de la Recordación surgió en la 1ra G
uerra Mundial. Sobre el conjunto de marinos se muestra el Sello del Gobierno de Puerto Rico y se lee: " 1ra Guerra Mundial 1917 Puertorricans in WWI 1918 ". A la izquierda de los marinos se muestran 2 medallas, una americana y otra francesa, dadas a los veteranos, mientras al lado opuesto se lee: " 236,000 Volunteered, 20,000 Drafted, 18,000 Served ". Alrededor de este conjunto se lee una banda de Boricuas famosos en nuestra historia, que sirvieron en esta guerra: " Dolores Piñero, Eustaquio Correa, Félix Rigau, Frederick Riefkohl, Joseph Avilés, Luis Esteves, Nero Chen, Pedro Albizu Campos, Pedro DelValle, Rafael Hernández, Rudolph Riefkohl, Virgil Miller, & otros más..."
ESPECIFICACIONES:
Medalla grande tamaño 50mm x 3mm, y peso de 44.5 gramos, (tamaño medalla del ICPR pero mas delgada y liviana) en Bronce cubierto níquel antiguo, estilo "Gun Metal finish" en inglés, y pintura en esmalte, con borde acanalado (como la peseta), y terminación sin circular. Viene encapsulada en una pieza de fuerte plástico protector contra rayazos. La tirada total se limitó a 100 piezas enumeradas individualmente.

Howdy!
Big sized medal honoring the Centennial of granting American Citizenship to Puerto Ricans in 1917, as a result of the Jone's - Shafroth Act of March 2, 1917 signed by President Woodrow Wilson, in order to recruit Puerto Ricans to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces during WWI. A total of 18,000 Puerto Ricans served in World War I, in France and around the Caribbean, not counting thousand's more that were recruited stateside, mostly in Eastern States some of which served with the LEGENDARY New York's Harlem Hell Fighters, mostly comprised of African Americans, with the rest being Puerto Rican, who were taken in such high regard that the Military would subsequently fly down to recruit more Islanders in future wars to come, up to this day.
CHARACTERISTICS:
The objective was to create a piece with an old fashioned style common to the WWI era, mixed with martial military theme as main subject, thus an opaque, Gun Metal finish was chosen as material.
The OBVERSE borrows from the VA logo, this time with the Bald Eagle carrying a Puerto Rican as well as an American Flag (an irony of life, back in WWI era, our flag had been declared illegal to display publicly, deemed as a crime of rebellion, not by Americans, but by pro-statehood Puerto Ricans in the island's legislative. Puerto Rico would not be able to publicly display its own flag until it was "adopted" as the Commonwealth's flag in 1952) The medal is in both English and Spanish, so this side talks about the Centenary of the Grant of American Citizenship. The latin phrase "E Pluribus Unum", meaning "Out of Many, One" refers to the legal union of Puerto Rican's to that of Americans Stateside, citizenship wise.

isplays a Color Guard by service members of the Navy, holding both PR & US flags, with an American Navy Cross and a French "Croix de Guerre" (War Cross), given after the war, official numbers of islanders who Volunteered, were drafted, and actually served, the Seal of the Government of Porto Rico (Puerto Rico), from this era, and a list of some high profile islanders that then moved on to become famous in their own right, whether in the U.S. Military, the Commonwealth's politics, and music and arts, and sports, amongst other fields.
DATA SPECIFICS:
This big medal measures 50mm x 3mm, has a weight of 44.5 grams, and has reeded edge, like a quarter dollar. It is made of bronze with antique nickel ( Gun Metal finish), is in Uncirculated condition, and comes in its protective plastic capsule, to save it from scratches. There is a total mintage of a mere 100 pieces, each serially numbered.
